A leading care organisation in East Dunbartonshire is hoping more employers will follow its lead - by investing in Modern Apprenticeships.

Orems Care Services (, which is based in Torrance, is one of the many firms around the country backing Skills Development Scotland's Scottish Apprenticeship Week (May 21 to 25).

Director Asonta Hailstones explains: "Every industry benefits from having Modern Apprentices. Investing in your staff pays off as you are rewarded with a more loyal, committed workforce who feel valued in return."

Zoe Hinds joined Orems nine months ago after a spell as a volunteer youth worker encouraged her to think about nursing and social care as a career.

"I wanted to get as much on-the-job training as possible, which is why I jumped at the chance of doing the Modern Apprenticeship at Orems," explains the 20-year-old from Twechar.

"It has been brilliant - I have learned a lot and my confidence has improved so much. I've just heard that I have been accepted to study learning disability nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University, and I believe my Modern Apprenticeship and my time here at Orems has had a huge part to play in that."

John McClelland, Chair of Skills Development Scotland, said: "It has never been more important for businesses across Scotland to grow and develop a skilled workforce. Employers can find out how they can access support to help them to employ apprentices by calling our helpline on 0800 783 6000 or going onto our Modern Apprentice section."
